St Columba's Vicar
Christine
Haddon-Reece. The church of
St Columba dominates the village of Topcliffe. In times past it served as
the focus for all community life. But times change: the church no longer
holds the same level of importance. Once the village would have had its own
parish priest; today St Columba’s is only one in a group of five parishes,
although the Vicarage is still situated here.
Nowadays, the church can not rely on
people coming automatically through its doors. If it is to have any impact,
the church must go out and be involved at every level of community life, and
yet St Columba’s is still an important focal point, especially in times of
celebration or sadness. Children are brought for baptism; couples come to
make their marriage vows before God; loved ones are remembered in
thanksgiving and their lives entrusted to the care of God before burial.
Above all our church seeks to be a
centre of living worship and a place of prayer. Services are held every
Sunday and the Gospel is proclaimed in language relevant to the society and
world in which we live.
I hope you enjoy our website and will
visit our church if you are in the area. A ready welcome awaits you. |
